Cuba has become accessible to the United States. Nonstop flights from US cities are now available. Yet, the cost of tours are a deterrent for many people. Your alternative -- stay in a "Casa Particular" or a private home for a fraction of the cost of a hotel. Private homes have become very popular in Cuba.
Private homes are an excellent way to mix with Cuban locals, learn about the culture first hand and get to know the city. While in Cuba last month, I checked out several private homes and developed a small list of places I would stay in. These places are not super fancy and probably do not have internet access (internet is not available to most people in Cuba), but they are charming.
1. The first place is Called Casa Havana Senses. Casa Havana Senses is a beautiful 100 years old Spanish colonial house in Havana. It has high ceilings, arched columns, stained glass doors and colorful floor mosaics.
It has a big roof terrace with city view that they were fixing up when I visited. You will enjoy a spacious living room. Casa Havana Senses is an artists' home full of beautiful artwork.
They rent three air conditioned rooms with a private bedroom for approximately $30-$35 per night. The kitchen and living room is shared. Below is a picture of European tourists staying at the home.
It is located in a higher level, so you would need to climb stairs to reach the living areas. Below is information on the rental:

2. The next rental is in Central Havana and is offered by a couple. They live in the downstairs area and rent the entire upstairs apartment.
The apartment is not shared with any other party, so if you prefer more privacy, this would be the place for you.
The small two bedroom apartment is clean, compact and has all the basics needed to stay and enjoy the city. This apartment rents for $25 per night.
